Microsoft .NET

We have developed many projects using the Microsoft platform stemming back to 1995 with Visual C++ 4 & Visual Basic 4 and SQL Server since 1998. These days we work with the various versions of the .NET framework and various Microsoft Server products...

...and many others. In addition we're very comfortable administering Windows servers and workstations for both clients and for our own internal usage.

Linux, Apache, MySQL & PHP

The last decade has seen a significant uptake in Open Source based systems. A well known configuration is called LAMP (Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP) although these items can be replaced by alternatives (e.g. PostgreSQL instead of MySQL). We've been working with Open Source for the last few years and in particular;

  • Various Linux distros (including Red Hat, Ubuntu and CentOS) and administration tools like Plesk.
  • MySQL
  • PHP & Zend Optimizer
  • Joomla & WordPress
  • JShop

A popular misconception is that Open Source is free, sometimes this is true, but it really refers to having access to source code which can be modified.

Adobe

We make use of a range of Adobe products for two main purposes.

Design

We make use of Adobe's creative tools such as Photoshop and Illustrator to develop screenshots and mock-ups of web sites and applications. These are used to demonstrate and provide feedback from customers about design concepts and ideas before any actual software development work is done.

Development

Whilst the majority of a web site would be developed using either the LAMP or Microsoft stack we will make use of Flash and it's associated tools (FlexAir) for certain visual elements and have created various Flash based applications.

Mobile Phones

We started doing what is now classed as mobile phone development on Pocket PC's using the .NET Compact Framework (which has evolved into Windows Mobile).

These days it's all about the iPhone and we should be releasing our first iPhone application soon. Whilst Apple have popularised smart phones, other contenders have entered the market place.

We're keeping a close eye on the Android operating system from Google and the Palm Pre since these are becoming increasingly popular and from a technical perspective are the more flexible platforms.

Cloud Computing

Clound Computing is a very broad term for many different types of online services. For example we've been using Google Apps and other online tools internally and on small projects. These can be thought of as SaaS (software as a service).

We tend to think of cloud computing as PaaS (platform as a service) and have been looking at the main players in this area;

The IT industry has always over-used acronyms and jargon. Cloud Computing takes it a step further!!

JavaScript

JavaScript and, to a lesser extent, other ECMAScript derivatives have become a software development platform in their own right. A number of frameworks have evolved and we are familar with the widely used ones;

There are many others, and all of the frameworks are constantly evolving. It'll be interesting to see if Microsoft's adoption of JQuery changes things.

Embedded Software

From 8bit microcontrollers through to 32bit embedded processors we can develop using assembler, C and C++ and have considerable experience of bringing up new hardware, writing device drivers as well as full embedded applications.

Previous projects include;

  • 4 stereo channel soundcard driver for CE4.2 (a first at the time)
  • AV Receivers
  • Smartcard readers
  • Numerous smaller controller projects.

Games Development

Our skills lie in browser based Games using Flash and Flex as well as writing PC based games using 3D engines and different controller devices. More about our commercial games can be seen here, while more about our passion for games development can be seen here.
